Pre Qualifying Criteria:
These criteria vary according to the grade of RYA/MCA Yachtmaster required. However, in all cases the independent examiner will usually want to see evidence – normally in the form of a personal log – that these have been met, and the supporting qualifications are in place.
The Examination Application Form ensures this is the case.
If there is any doubt regarding the acceptable level of qualifying experience, the examiner will point this out and give the candidate the opportunity to withdraw the application.
Criteria and supporting Qualifications:
- 50 days sea time.
- 5 days as skipper.
- 2,500 miles logged of which 1,250 must have been in tidal waters.
- 5 passages over 60 miles, including 2 overnight and 2 as skipper.
- Restricted (VHF only) Radio Operator’s certificate.
- First Aid Certificate – See here for a list of unacceptable certificates
Note:
1. All experience must have been gained within 10 years of examination.
2. Qualifying Passages – must have been on vessels between 7m and 24m length LOA (less than 80gt).
3. Qualifying Seatime
- at least 50% of qualifying mileage must be completed on vessels of between 7m and 24m length LOA (less than 80gt).
- up to 50% may be completed on vessels over 24m and less than 200gt. Requires supporting testimonials or a Seaman’s Discharge book.

Form of Examination

Examiner’s Responsibility
