Competitive racing throughout the American continent
Sailing is a passion in the Americas, just as it is with the British and French.
In 1851 the Commodore of the New York Yacht Club, John Cox Stevens, sailed his yacht America across the Atlantic to challenge the British Royal Yacht Squadron and took the “One Hundred Sovereign Cup”. Such was the supremacy of the NYYC team and their yacht, the Royal Yacht Squadron donated the trophy to the NYYC in 1857. The “Americas Cup” was born to be a challenge cup for sportsmanlike competition between nations. A little different to the Americas Cup as we know it today!
